This is a list of the rulers of the Sultanate of Sulu.

The Sultan of Sulu was an office recognized by the government in Manila until 1936. Sulu is currently a province of the Philippines, although at one time it was an independent sultanate. The centre of government of the Sulu Sultanate kingdom was in Jolo. Jolo not only became the centre of the Sulu Sultanate government, but also became the centre of port trading. And while Manila was just a small settlement, Jolo had already became a city. The following list details the holders of the office between 1450 and 1936.

Most of the names listed below, was refer from the book's of; MUSLIMS IN THE PHILIPPINES, by CESAR ADIB MAJUL.

'1.'SULTAN SHARIFUL-HASHIM

  • The first Sultan of Sulu; he founded the sultanate in 1450 and held it until 1480.

2.SULTAN KAMALUDDIN,

  • Son of Sultan Shariful-Hashim. 1480-1519.

3. DATU ALAWADDIN

  • also one of Sultan Shariful-Hashim son. But believed he was not proclaim to be the "Sultan of Sulu".

'4. SULTAN AMIRUL-UMARA

  • Believed he was Sultan Bolkiah @ Nakhoda Ragam of Brunei.

5. SULTAN MUIZZUDDIN MUTAWADDIN @ MAHARAJAH UPO,

  • Son of Sultan Kamaluddin and grandchild (Upo or Apo) of Sultan Shariful-Hashim.

6. SULTAN NASARUDDIN AL-AWAL @ DIGUNUNG ULA,

  • Son of Sultan Muizzuddin Mutawaddin.

7. SULTAN MUHAMMAD UL-HALIM @ PANGIRAN BUDDIMAN UL-HALIM,

  • Son of Sultan Nasaruddin Awal.
  • He alleged had a few "Palace" in Brunei.
  • The Spaniard called him as Sultan Xolo or Raja Ilo or Iro.

8. SULTAN BETARASHAH TENGAH @ PENGUILAN TINDIG

  • Son of Sultan Muhammad Buddiman Ul-Halim.
  • Died without heir.
  • The throne given to his Nephew, RAJA BONGSU-I. (The son's of her sister who married Sultan Hassan of Brunei).

9. SULTAN MAWALIL-WASIT @ RAJA BONGSU-I @ PANGIRAN SHAHBANDAR MAHARAJALELA IBNI SULTAN MUHAMMAD HASSAN of BRUNEI (Refer to; Raja Bongsu of Sulu -Robert Nicholl & Tarsilah Brunei -Pehin Dato' Dr. Mohd Jamil Al-Sufri).

  • Began from this Sultan Mawalil-Wasit @ Raja Bongsu-I, the Sulu Sultanate royal families (Royal Blood-Male side) were connected to Brunei Royal families blood.
  • So, any statement of the Sulu heirs mentioned that their blood were the "DIRECT-DESCENDENT & UNBROKEN-LINE" to Sultan Shariful Hashim (the first Sultan of Sulu) were NOT SO CORRECT. They should UNDERSTAND first the meaning of "UNBROKEN-LINE" and the meaning of "DIRECT-DESCENDENT". "DIRECT-DESCENDENT & UNBROKEN-LINE" mean must came from "MALE SIDE" (Heirs). Sultan Shariful-Hashim heirs was till Sultan Betara shah Tengah @ Panguilan Tinding ibni Sultan Pangiran Buddiman Ul-Halim only.

10. SULTAN NASIRUDDIN-II'

  • Maybe he is Sultan Qudarat of Maguindanao.
  • Married to one of Sultan Mawalil-Wasit @ Raja Bongsu-I daughter, bore SITI KABIRA @ SULTANA NURUL A'LAM (One of the temporary Sultan of Sulu in 1680-1685).

11. SULTAN SALAHUDDIN-KARAMAT @ PANGIRAN BAKHTIAR

  • The third son's of Sultan Mawalil-Wasit @ Raja Bongsu-I, after Datu Katchil & Datu Salikala.
  • Alleged in his time the Sultan of Brunei asked for help to settle-down their 10 years sivil war in Brunei. Then Sultan Brunei gave North-Borneo to Sultan of Sulu as a reward.
  • The Sulu worriors & panglimas were foughts for rewarded North-Borneo territory.

While waiting for Datu Sahabuddin ibni Sultan Salahuddin-Karamat to be entitle installed as Sultan (*Followed the Sulu Protocol), there was installed the "3 Temporary Sultans of Sulu" to sat on the Sulu throne since 1680-1685, such as,

'12. SULTAN ALI SHAH,

13. SULTAN NURUL A'LAM @ SITI KABIRA IBNI SULTAN MAWALIL-WASIT @ RAJA BONGSU-I, and

14. SULTAN AL-HAQUNU IBN WALI UL AHAD.

15. SULTAN SAHABUDDIN

  • First son of Sultan Salahuddin-Karamat.
  • Began received the tax payment from North-Borneo

16. SULTAN MUSTAFA SHAFIUDDIN,

  • Second son of Sultan Salahuddin-Karamat.

17. SULTAN BADARUDDIN-I

  • The third son of Sultan Salahuddin-Karamat.
  • His mother's was a Tirun lady. And also married a Tirun Princess, the daughter of Tirun ruler as his second-wife. His first wife was from Soopeng, Sulawesi.

In this time, due he was born Datu Lagasan (Sultan Azimuddin/Alimuddin-I) from his first wife (from Soopeng, Sulawesi) & Raja Muda Datu Bantilan (Sultan Bantilan Muizzuddin) from his second wife (the Tirun Ruler Princess), then the Sulu Sultanate kingdom had 2 heirs. Its a "First & the Second heir apparents". Nowadays, the first heir-apparents known as Kiram & Shakiraullah families. And the second heir apparent known as the Maharajah Adinda families.

  • SULTAN BADARUDDIN-I married to the Tirun princess for the purposed want to void the Tirun peoples from against the Sulu Sultanate "Power" in North-Borneo territory. He is the one who's put many "Panglimas" in every corners of the North-Borneo for maintain his power on the territory. The Panglimas of the Sultan of Sulu came from many tribes. Some from Sulu, Iranun, Badjau, Kadazan & other tribes.
  • The Panglimas duties were collecting the "Tax" from the inhabitants of the North-Borneo territory (*as representatives of the Sultan of Sulu. Collecting "Tax" from the inhabitants of the North-Borneo, made the inhabitants HATED the Sulu Sultanate & the Sultans of Sulu), collecting any material which its could became the "Incomes" of the Sulu Sultanate such as; Bird's Nest, Turtles shell, Pearls & etc.
  • For example, the "Bird's Nest" in Maddai Caves, Kunak, Sabah was mandated to collected by the Iranun Panglima's . Since then the Iranun peoples generations in the area till present day still continuing collecting the "Bird's Nest" from the Maddai Caves. Anyway, by the "LOST" of the "SULTAN OF SULU", the Iranun peoples in the area just collecting the Bird's Nest for their benefits only. (*Anyway, there was the "Appointed-Letter" was given to the Irunan Panglima's from the Sultan of Sulu, as installation of him as panglima & his duties in North-Borneo. This "Letter's" must be still kept by the present Iranun Panglima's generations).

The Sulu Sultanate Protocol System (The Tartib) then need to ROTATES the Sulu throne among the first & the second heir apparents. "The Succession", please refer to; Muslims in the Philippines (Sulu Political Institution) by Cesar Abib Majul -Page 398-399). And the Sulu throne should not be MONOPOLIED or OCCUPIED by ONE side heirs only

18. SULTAN AZIMUDDIN @ ALIMUDDIN-II @ FERNANDO DE ALIMUDDIN.

  • Son's of Sultan Badaruddin-I, & the older brother of Sultan Bantilan Muizzuddin.
  • He was "Baptised" by Spaniard at Manila in 1750.

19. SULTAN BANTILAN MUIZZUDDIN IBNI SULTAN BADARUDDIN-I.

  • The ancestor's of THE MAHARAJAH ADINDA FAMILIES.

20. SULTAN AZIMUDDIN @ ALIMUDDIN-II IBNI SULTAN BANTILAN MUIZZUDDIN.

  • Then he born RAJA MUDA DATU BANTILAN. Raja Muda Datu Bantilan born MAHARAJAH ADINDA SULTAN MOHAMMAD ARANAN/ADANAN PUYO. Aranan/Adanan Puyo born DATU MOHAMMAD SHIEIK/SIE/SEH/SY. Datu Mohammad Sheikh/Sie/Seh/Sy born Late HH. DATU ALIUDDIN HADDIS PABILA (December 17, 2004 - June 30, 2007). Then Datu Aliuddin Haddis Pabila born "RAJA BONGSU-II" (The entitle & the right heir should sit on the Sulu throne nowadays) .

21. SULTAN MUHAMMAD ISRAIL,

  • Son of Sultan Azimuddin @ Alimuddin-I.


22. SULTAN SHAFIUDDIN,

  • Also son of Sultan Azimuddin @ Alimuddin-I.


23. SULTAN ALIMUDDIN @ AZIMUDDIN-III

  • Son's of Sultan Sharafuddin.
  • The 40 days reigned Sultan in 1808. His Raja Muda is Raja Muda Datu Bantilan @ Raja Muda Badaruddin ibni Sultan Alimuddin @ Azimuddin-II.


24. SULTAN ALIUDDIN

  • The brother's of Sultan Alimuddin @ Azimuddin-III
  • The Sultan who's taken the Sulu throne from the Raja Muda Datu Bantilan ibni Sultan Alimuddin @ Azimuddin-II in 1808, while the Raja Muda Datu Bantilan was not in Jolo, Sulu (*because of chicken-pox outbreak) in 1808, after the death of Sultan Alimuddin @ Azimudin-III - (Muslims in the Philippines, Cesar Adib Majul -Page 316-317).

(*The action of this Sultan Aliuddin was AGAINST the Sulu Sultanate Protocol System/ The Tartib).


25. SULTAN SHAKIRAULLAH,

  • The brother of Sultan Aliuddin & Sultan Azimuddin @ Alimuddin-III.
  • The SHAKIRAULLAH families began.


26. SULTAN JAMALUL-KIRAM-I,

  • Son's of Sultan Alimuddin @ Azimuddin-III.
  • The KIRAM families began.


27. SULTAN MUHAMMAD FADL @ SULTAN PULALUN,

  • Kiram Families.
  • Son's of Sultan Jamalul-Kiram-I.
  • In September 1862, Sultan Pulalun died. The throne was offered to his uncle DATU ARANAN, who at a young age once aspired to the throne. However, he declined the sultanate on the grounds that he was too old and lacked of wealth.

(*Anyway, from the Maharajah Adinda families record, Datu Aranan/Adanan was ever sat on the Sulu throne for a week only & using the title name as "Maharajah Adinda Sultan Mohammad Aranan/Adanan Puyo" . That's why in Sulu he was known as "Sultan Daih-daih". Mean, the shortest reigned Sultan of Sulu. And due to that, his name was not listed on the Sulu Sultanate genealogy, due to not enough 40 day of reigned, as the protocol needed).

Thus was the sultanate offered to Jamalul-Azam, a son of Pulalun. Datu Daniel, the Amir Bahar, and whose cotta in Jolo once gave the Spaniard a great deal of trouble in Jolo Campaign in 1851, contested the succession. The datu desired to have his son-in-law, Datu Jamalul-Kiram, a grandson of Sultan Shakiraullah to become a sultan. But Datu Aranan INTERVENTION in the matter as well as Spaniard refusal to show any sympathy for Datu Daniel's cause, led the majority of the datus to proclaim Jamalul-Azam as Sultan, (Refer to; Muslims in the Philippines -Page 343-344).

Do anybody AWARE, that because of Datu Aranan intervention, Datu Jamalu-Azam succeeded to proclaimed as Sultan of Sulu in 1862. And from that matter, when he signing the 1878 North-Borneo "Padjak=Leasing" Agreement, he was using the words term "The heirs AND successors" 4 times in the agreement, NOT the words term as "The heirs OR successors", (Refer to: Nicholas Tarling, Sulu And Sabah -Page 329). The words term was for LIMITED the claimants over the North-Borneo territory in future. And the right claimant's should be truly came from the Sulu Sultanate royal families as "The heirs" & in the same time can be "The successors" to the Sulu sultanate throne, by following the Sulu Sultanate Protocol System (The Tartib). By the using the words term "The heirs AND successors" in the 1878 North Borneo Leasing/Padjak Agreement, showed that Sultan Jamalul-Azam want the Maharajah Adinda families to inherits the rights over the North Borneo territory in future. That's also showed his compensation to his relative grandfather's (Datu Aranan) for his kindness till Datu Jamalul-Azam succeeded to be the Sultan of Sulu in 1862.

So, by the death of Sultan Badaruddin-II in 1884, or by the death of Sultan Jamalu-Kiram-II in 1936, which both of the Sultan had "No male heir" (Refer; Nicholas Tarling, Sulu And Sabah -Page 327 & from the PAWCI Record's), then supposedly on that times, the Sulu throne should be given back to the Maharajah Adinda families. Unfortunately, till present the first heir-apparents (Kiram & Shakiraullah families) still want to "Monopolied & Occupied" the Sulu throne. (Their action were totally against the Sulu Protocol System=The Tartib of Sulu. Due to misunderstood of the Sulu protocol system, then there were emerged so many proclaimed "Sultans" in Sulu till present day).

'28.MAHARAJAH ADINDA/ARINDA SULTAN MOHAMMAD ARANAN/ADANAN PUYO (PRoclaimed as "Sultyan of Sulu" just for a week only in 1862, before he gave his throne to DATU JAMALUL AZAM.

  • Datu Aranan SEcond son's name DATU MOHAMMAD SHEIKH/DATU SIE, bore DATU ALIUDDIN HADDIS PABILA (*Proclaimed as Sultan of Sulu on 17th Dcember 2004. Datu Aliuddin succeeded by his youngest-son's HRH PRINCE RAJA Bongsu-II (*The RIGHTS heirs to the Sulu throne from the Maharajah Adinda Families).


29. SULTAN JAMALUL AZAM @ A'LAM,

  • Kiram Families.
  • Son of Sultan Pulalun.
  • Succeeded to be proclaimed as "Sultan of Sulu" by the helps & strong supports of his relative grandfather's Maharajah Adinda Sultan Mohammad Aranan/Adanan Puyo in 1862.
  • The person who "Padjak=Leased" the North Borneo territory to Mr. Barron de Overback & Alfred Dent in 1878. Mr Barron & Alfred Dent "Leased=Padjak" the North Borneo territory was for "Trading" purposed only.

30 SULTAN BADARUDDIN-II

Kiram Families.

  • Son's of Sultan Jamalul-Azam.
  • No "Male heirs", only got a daughter name Dayang-dayang Hjh Piandao.

31. SULTAN JAMALUL-KIRAM-II.

  • Kiram Families.
  • Son's of Sultan Jamalul Azam @ A'lam.
  • No issued any "Male heir" till his death in 1936.


AFTER SULTAN JAMALUL-KIRAM-II DIED IN 1936, THEN THERE WERE NO MORE "RECOGNISED" SULTAN OF SULU BY THE PHILIPPINES, SPECIALLY AFTER PRESIDENT MANUEL L. QUEZONS STATED IN MEMORANDUM 20TH SEPT 1937, THAT HE WILL NOT "RECOGNISE" ANY "SUCCESSORS" TO SULTAN JAMALUL-KIRAM-II (KIRAM HOUSE?!). ANYWAY HE WAS NOT "ABOLISH" THE SULU SULTANATE KINGDOM. SO WITHOUT ABOLISHING THE SULU SULTANATE, THERE WERE SHOULD BE STILL SOMEONE OR FAMILIES OF THE SULU ROYAL FAMILIES CAN BE "THE HEIRS AND SUCCESSOR TO THE SULU SULTANATE KINGDOM"(refer the words term of "THE HEIR AND SUCCESSOR" on the 1878 NORTH-BORNEO "PADJAK" AGREEMENT).


SULTAN ESMAIL KIRAM I (1947-1973)

  • Kiram Families
  • Born: February 1907
  • Died: 1973
  • Teacher & School Principal
  • World War II soldier with the rank of Captain, served under United States Armed Forces in the Far East
  • The eldest son of Raja Muda Mawallil-Wasit through first wife Enang
  • One of the 9 heirs of North Borneo through the 1939 Chief Justice Macasckie decision in Sandakan, Sabah
  • Eligible as the Sultan of Sulu

DATU ATIK IBNI SULTAN JAMALUL AZAM @ A'LAM

  • Kiram Families.
  • Not become a Sultan.
  • His daughters, Dayang-Dayang Princess Tarhatta-Kiram & Dayang-Dayang Princess Shakinur-in.

SULTAN MAHAKUTTA A.KIRAM (1974-1986)

  • Kiram Families
  • Born:1 August 1941
  • Died: February 16, 1986
  • Became the youngest vice Mayor and eventually the Mayor of Maimbung
  • Former Deputy Governor of Sulu
  • The eldest son of Sultan Esmail Kiram I
  • Married to his first wife, prncess Farida Kiram gave birth 2 daughters:Dayang Zuharra, Dyg Dinwansa, and 2 sons HRH Rajamuda Datu Muedzulail-Kiram (Crown Prince since 1974) , HRH Datu Yldon Kiram
  • Second Wife Princess Merriam T.Kiram gave 3 Daughters, Dayang-Dayang Nur Mahal, dayang-Dayang Ayessha and Dayang-Dayang Tanya Rowena.

PRINCE DATU MUEDZUL-lAIL T.KIRAM

  • The RIGHT heir to the Sulu throne from the Kiram FAmilies.

  • Shakiuraullah families.
  • Died in 2006?!
  • Their dynasty continue by proclaimed "Paramount Sultan Dr. Ibrahim Bahjin @ Sultan Shakiraullah-II" in 2006?!
  • PARAMOUNT SULTAN DR. IBRAHIM BAHJIN also can be the RIGHT heir to the Sulu throne from the Shakiraullah Families.

  • But the International Commission of Nobility and Royalty does not support his claims to sovereignty and his Orders of Chivalry are Unsubstantiated.
