Meanwhile, Frank wakes up on a park bench in France with no idea how he got there; and when he scares local residents trying to find out the time, he ends up in a French jail. When news of Frank's predicament gets back to the estate, Fiona quickly works out that Steve is responsible and orders him to drive to Calais to collect Frank, with Kev and Veronica agreeing to go along. On his return to Chatsworth, an unamused Frank is greeted by locals waving French flags in his honour. Unable to find other accommodations, Frank wanders the streets of Manchester, raving, then heads for The Jockey where he meets up with Eddie Jackson and learns that Eddie's left Sheila. When he wakes in the morning and remembers what he's done, he realises that he needs to come clean and admit to Veronica that he's already married. Veronica soon accepts that they won't be able to get married after all. But when an excited Carol appears and informs Veronica that her father left money to pay for her wedding, Veronica and Kev decide to fake it and use the money to pay off their home. The fake wedding plan hits the rocks when Veronica's brother Marty escapes from jail. He locks himself in the bathroom and threatens to set Veronica's dress alight after she refuses to let him attend the wedding. | Frank's past seems to have finally caught up with him, leaving Fiona and the kids between a rock and a hard place. They try to convince the bailiffs that Frank doesn't live there whilst simultaneously pretending that he does for Housing Officer Billy Wilson (who has known Frank since he was young) when he comes round to make a report. As a result, the Gallaghers learn that their absent mother Monica has been living happily with a "bloke" called Norma nearby in Moston since she left. Frank has a plan to claim child support from Monica which, while clumsily executed, ultimately reunites her with the kids. After remonstrating with her mother for leaving her to raise five siblings at the age of sixteen, Fiona moves in with Steve, leaving Monica to clean up her own mess at long last. | |||||

| Norma is ready to return to Moston and orders Monica to pack her bags but Monica won't leave the kids without anyone to look after them. The kids eventually decide they don't want her there but Frank's love for Monica has been rekindled and this does not go unnoticed by either Norma or Sheila, despite her agoraphobia. Norma convinces Frank that the best way to escape his debts once and for all is to fake his own death, which he does convincingly enough for both the bailiffs and Housing Officer Billy Wilson after Norma knocks him unconscious. Sheila overcomes her agoraphobia by accidentally running outdoors when she gets chilli powder in her eyes and later, to the surprise and delight of everyone on the estate, attends Frank's "wake" at The Jockey to announce that she's pregnant. Meanwhile, local constables Tony and Stan realise that Steve is a car thief. Tony tries to chase Steve away and blackmail Fiona by threatening to arrest him. When Fiona makes her feelings on the notion - and for Steve - clear, Tony arrest Steve anyway but relents when Steve makes Tony an offer he can't refuse. With Tony placated, Steve buys the derelict house next door to Fiona's then sets it on fire for the insurance money. | |||||

| Frank's father Neville comes to town to see his new twin grandchildren Nigel and Delia and catches Sheila wearing her black strap-on dildo under a silk robe. Neville makes Frank take Sheila out to eat and says that in order to pay for it Frank must find a job. Desperate to avoid real work, one morning Frank is stumbling hungover down the street and accidentally knocks a window washer off his ladder while distracted taunting a local housewife across the street with a catcall sung to the tune of "How Much is that Doggy in the Window". This inspires him to lie to his father and pretend that he has found work as window washer himself by carrying around a ladder and bucket and dumping water on his head. Neville is suspicious and decides to stay on a few weeks. At this news Frank breaks down and starts sobbing on the couch where Debbie blows his nose and offers to help him fool her grandfather. Debbie feigns sickness to stay home from school so she can walk Frank off to catch an imaginary van for work. The next morning Debbie cooks up a full breakfast for Neville, Frank, Sheila and the twins while hiding in the kitchen and letting Frank pretend he is doing the work. The ruse is up when Neville follows Frank to work anyway where the two have a shouting match that results in Neville having a heart attack. Meanwhile the ease with which the sultry Karen gets hired as a beer wench at the Jockey prompts Veronica to attack her and accuse Kevin of getting her the job just so he could shag her. In truth the Jockey's owner Jez is known as "Jez the Lez" and Karen lied to her that she was gay just to get the job. Veronica continues to throw Karen around like a rag doll and gets banned and fined by Jez for her conduct. At the hospital, Liam is given the all clear, but a routine follow-up visit from Social Services reunites Fiona with her old school rival, Katrina Webb, who Fiona referred to as "Sperm Whale" during their schooldays, and who is coincidentally engaged to Joey.
