List of MetJHL Standings
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The following is a listing of Metro Junior Hockey League Standings. The Metro Junior Hockey League was a Canadian Tier II Junior "A" ice hockey league that was absorbed by the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League in 1998. The league operated out of the Greater Toronto Area, but also pushed into Eastern Ontario,[1][2] Southwestern Ontario,[3][4] New York,[5][6] and Pennsylvania.[7]
From the 1950s until the 1980s, the Metro was considered to be an elite Junior "B" hockey league.[8] In the late 1980s, the league severed ties with the Ontario Hockey Association and Hockey Canada. In 1991, it declared itself a Tier II Junior "A" league. In 1993, the Metro helped found the Canadian Junior A Hockey League. The league was completely absorbed by the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League in 1998.
By declaring itself renegade, the league put itself in direct competition with the Ontario Hockey Association, a rare occurrence. In modern history, the only other league to attempt to break away from the OHA has been the Western Ontario Junior A Hockey League.[9]
This article shows the year by year breakdown of the results of the league through final standings. In the standings, included are games played, wins, losses, ties, goals for and against, as well as final points (2 for a win, 1 for a tie). The purpose of this list is to document the league's history in a way to show the trends in the league as pertaining to successful teams, unsuccessful teams, its members, and its champions.

The Markham Waxers were 1972 Metro champions and Sutherland Cup All-Ontario champions. They defeated the St. Marys Lincolns of the Western Ontario Junior B Hockey League 4-games-to-1 to clinch the provincial title.
The 1971-72 season marked the end of the "Golden Years" of the Metro Junior B Hockey League. At the end of this season, the league was raided for teams and talent by the Ontario Hockey Association to create an Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League instead of cooperating with and building up the sometimes controversial Southern Ontario Junior A Hockey League. The OPJHL took Richmond Hill, Weston, Dixie, Wexford, Aurora, North York, Downsview, Whitby-Ajax, and even Markham a year later. It is unknown what happened to the Scarborough franchise past 1972. By 1973, only the St. Michael's Buzzers and the Toronto Nationals remained as original Metro league members.

[edit] 1972–73
The Toronto Nationals were the 1973 Metro champions. The Nationals were Sutherland Cup finalists as they lost to the Western Ontario Junior B Hockey League's Sarnia Bees 4-games-to-2.
This season was the first after the creation of the Ontario Provincial Junior A league, and the loss of the Ajax Steelers, Aurora Tigers, Dixie Beehives, Downsview Bees, North York Rangers, and the Richmond Hill Rams to that league. In their place, the 1972-73 season featured first year teams in Oshawa, Bramalea, Pickering, Whitby, and Wexford as well as the Metro absorbed Peterborough and Belleville from the folding of the Eastern Ontario Junior B Hockey League. The Whitby Tiremen only lasted for one season, but evolved into the Whitby Bruins.

[edit] 1973–76
There was no Toronto Sun coverage between 1973 and 1976. The league was likely covered by other Toronto, Kingston, or Belleville papers.
[edit] 1976–77
The Seneca Nationals, led by future NHLers 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky, 17-year old Paul Coffey, Bill Gardner, and Stuart Smith, were the 1977 Metro Champions. Gretzky scored 36 goals and 36 assists in 32 games, and then 40 goals and 35 assists in 23 playoff games to lead his team to a Metro Junior "B" Championship. The Nationals were stopped in the 1977 All-Ontario Semi-final playing the Stratford Cullitons who were the Wellington-Waterloo Junior B Hockey League champs.
The Toronto Red Wings were the league's top team heading into the playoffs. The rest of the Central Division was within three wins of each other as parity ruled the 1976-77 season. The Eastern Division was ruled by the Oshawa Legionaires, followed closely by Pickering, Markham, and Belleville.
The 1976-77 season also saw the Metro league develop a much larger following as it was from then on covered by the widely distributed Toronto Sun.

The 1978 Metro Champions are unknown at this time.
The 1977-78 starts off with a weakened Toronto Nationals, as a 16-year-old Wayne Gretzky opts out of his third year in the Metro and was drafted in the OHA draft, third overall, by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds after leading the Nats to a Metro title in 1977.
The North York Rangers change their name to the North York Flames to differentiate themselves from the North York Rangers of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League.
The Oshawa Legionaires, led by first year coach Mike Keenan, were the best team in the Eastern Division as well as the entire league in the regular season. With only 4 losses, the Legionaires entered the playoffs as heavy favourites. The second best team, and runaway best of the Central Division was the St. Michael's Buzzers.

Peterborough rejoins the Metro after a three year hiatus.
The Oshawa Legionaires, led by rookie Dale Hawerchuk, and coached by Mike Keenan, are again the league's top team, largely uncontested in their own division. The Bramalea Blues edged out the St. Michael's Buzzers by one win to clinch the top seed in the Central Division.

The St. Michael's Buzzers were the 1982 Metro and All-Ontario Sutherland Cup Champions.
The Belleville Bobcats moved to become the Trenton Bobcats. The Port Credit Titans move from the Eastern to the Central to decrease travel.
The Henry Carr Crusaders topped the Central Division, while Peterborough and Trenton tied for the lead in the Eastern Division. Regardless of this the St. Michael's Buzzers won the league and then later won the Sutherland Cup by defeating the Sarnia Bees of the Western Junior B Hockey League in the Ontario final.

The Caledon Canadians won the 1995 Metro Championship.
The 1994-95 Season should have been a highlight for the Metro league. Just their second season in the CJAHL and as a sanctioned league, they put up a good showing at the OHA Championship. However, politics were in the air and at the conclusion of the season the Metro once again quit the OHA and Hockey Canada. To coincide with this, five teams quit the Metro league. The Mississauga Chargers, Bramalea Blues, St. Michael's Buzzers and Kingston Voyageurs jumped to the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League and the Richmond Hill Riot folded. This was the beginning of the end for the Metro.

The Aurora Tigers won the 1997 Metro Championship.
The expansion period continues as the league delved further into the US, seeking our the Syracuse Jr. Crunch. The league also added another Mid-Western Ontario team, the Durham Huskies and then added the Quinte Hawks and Port Hope Buzzards in Eastern Ontario.
On February 21, 1997, the Muskoka Bears' Ryan Venturelli became the first known goaltender in hockey history to score two goals (both empty net) in a hockey game against the Durham Huskies during the Metro Junior A Hockey League 1996-97 regular season [1].
After the season, the Aurora Tigers jumped to the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League and the Metro league, again, affiliated with the OHA.
