Flag Date Use Description
January 1, 1948 National flag and State ensign. A vertical tricolor of green, white and red.
Civil ensign The flag of Italy with a shield divided into four squares representing the four Maritime Republics of Italy: Venice (represented by the lion of St. Mark the evangelist, top left), Genoa (top right), Amalfi (bottom left), and Pisa (represented by their respective crosses).

The ensign is similar to the one used by the Marina Militare (Italian Navy), with the exception that the lion of Venice is carrying no sword, the emblem is not crowned and the book of the Gospel is open.

The ensign is similar to the civil ensign, with the exception that the lion of Venice is carrying a sword, the book of the Gospel is closed, and the emblem is crowned

1836?-1886; 1899-1962? Flag of the Kingdom of Tavolara On a white field a red shield with a distinctive golden six-pointed star, surmounted by a golden Tavolara crown.
1848 Flag of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany during the First Italian Independence war. The flag bears the coat of arms of the Habsburg-Lorraine family, decorated with Italian tricolours; note, however, that the coat of arms bears the red-white-red flag of Austria, the opponent of Italian unification.
