[edit] Bone Eater's Well
A central plot device in InuYasha, the Bone Eater's Well is a dry well so named because the bones of dead demons (yōkai) were traditionally disposed of by being thrown into it.
Either Kagome Higurashi or InuYasha or both together can travel between modern time and the Sengoku period of feudal Japan (circa 1500 AD) by descending to the bottom of the Bone Eater's well and then climbing out of it. They can carry objects with them.
As of Chapter 553, the well has vanished from both the past and present, much to the surprise of Sota and Grandpa. But Kagome is invisible when she stands near where it stood, implying that its presence has not been completely eradicated.

In modern time, the well is enclosed by a building within the Higurashi family shrine. In the Sengoku period, it stands alone in the forest near Kaede's village.

The first occasion when the well was used for time travel was when Kagome was dragged into it by Mistress Centipede. It had been sealed shut, but Mistress Centipede broke through the seals to try to get to the Jewel of Four Souls which was inside Kagome's body.
[edit] Demon exterminator's village
The demon exterminator's village (Taiji-ya no Sato) is the village in which Sango and Kohaku were born. The village was home to a clan of people who exterminate demons for a living. The Jewel of Four Souls formed in a cave near this village. Centuries later, the jewel was given to Kikyo by Shako of this village so she could keep it pure and protect it from demons. All the inhabitants of the village are killed by Naraku and his demons except for Sango, Kohaku, and Kirara.

The Goshinboku, the Sacred "God" Tree, or Tree of Ages is a fictional tree in InuYasha.

In modern day Tokyo, Goshinboku is located near the Higurashi Shrine. In the Sengoku period, Goshinboku is located in the forest near the Bone Eater's Well.

In the first volume of the manga, Turning Back Time, InuYasha was sealed to Goshinboku by Kikyo's sacred arrow. InuYasha spends fifty years sealed to Goshinboku before he was released by Kagome Higurashi.
Similarly, in the anime, InuYasha was sealed to Goshinboku for fifty years by Kikyo's sacred arrow until he was released by Kagome Higurashi in the first episode, The Girl Who Overcame Time... and the Boy Who Was Just Overcome. InuYasha's body was preserved by contact with the tree due to its magical powers.
Goshinboku is a crucial element of the first movie, Affections Touching Across Time.
[edit] Higurashi Shrine
Higurashi Shrine is home to Kagome Higurashi and her family, which includes her younger brother Sota, her mother, and her paternal grandfather. Kagome's family have been the keepers of the shrine for many generations.
Since there is very little income to be had, Kagome's grandfather is constantly trying to sell various artifacts, such as replicas of the legendary Shikon Jewel (the Jewel of Four Souls).
The shrine itself contains several buildings, including the main shrine, the Higurashi's house, storehouses containing various artifacts, and building enclosing the Bone Eater's Well, which serves as a portal for Kagome and InuYasha whenever they move between the Warring States Era and Kagome's time.
In the English manga, it is also called the Sunset Shrine.[citation needed]
[edit] Hakurei-Zan
Mount Hakurei (白霊山 Hakurei-zan?) was a mountain encased by an abnormally pure holy barrier so powerful it was able to completely eliminate any yōki (thereby killing pure-blooded yōkai) and even repel evil humans and dead souls (e.g. Kikyo). The source of this barrier was the living mummy of a monk named Hakushin, recognized as a saint by the people he devoted his life to saving. He chose to become a living Buddha (buried alive by these same people) to protect them indefinitely.
Naraku tricked Hakushin into making the barrier by telling him it was all right to hate the people that had buried him alive. He used this and the Shichinintai to distract and protect himself from InuYasha and the others pursuing him while he transformed and built a new body, making the detachment Akago in the process to hold Naraku's human heart.
During the time that this barrier was in existence, Hakurei was a tranquil and largely undisturbed mountain, covered in dense lush vegetation. The mountain was a very beautiful place as well as a very holy place.
Kanna was able to pass through the holy barrier unaffected because she had no demonic aura despite being a demon, though Kagura complains of being stung by the holy aura. As humans, Kohaku and the band of seven were able to exist within the barrier despite being dead merely because of the jewel shards in them. InuYasha was able to exist within the barrier once it forced his transformation to his human form (even though it was not the new moon). Most of the interior of the mountain was excluded from the barrier. This allowed Naraku to live and re-build his body while surrounded by the protection of the barrier.
Kikyo eventually found Hakushin and reassured him that it was all right to doubt and cry over his own death and weakness, helping him release his soul to Nirvana and causing the barrier to disappear, thus allowing InuYasha to once again become a hanyo.
Unfortunately, when the barrier came down, Naraku's evil aura (no longer confined to the interior) transformed the mountain into a horrifying shape. The mountain became bare of vegetation, and became very dark and craggy and demonic in appearance.
When the barrier fell, it was too late for InuYasha to stop Naraku's transformation, and Naraku escaped with his new body and detachment while the physical embodiment of Onigumo's old affection for Kikyo was buried and seemingly destroyed in the resulting collapse of the mountain. Much later, following Naraku's reabsorption of Akago and then Naraku's discovery of Kikyo's plan to purify him together with the Shikon Jewel (which would destroy both Naraku and the Jewel), Naraku returned to Mount Hakurei and reabsorbed the remains of Onigumo into himself, thus becoming a hanyo (half-demon) again and ensuring that even if Kikyo succeeded in her plan, he would survive.
