Linkline is a listening, support and information service, run by students for students, currently every night of Cambridge University full term between 7pm and 7am. Linkline is based in Cambridge and is available to students at both the University of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University. Linkline operates with four central principles which mean that it doesn’t tell callers what to do but will provide them with the time and space to talk things through, anonymously, in confidence.

[edit] Linkline's Principles
Linkline provides a listening service similar in style to The Samaritans and other phone-lines part of National Nightline. It provides an active listening service, not a counselling service. This means that Linkline does not offer advice but listens and discusses things with callers to help them find their own way forward.
[edit] Confidentiality
All Linkline's calls are confidential. Service users are able to talk about anything on their mind, without concern that anyone in their lives could find out.
[edit] Anonymity
Linkline do not ask callers names or personal details. The phones also have the 1471 function disabled so that callers are offered as much anonymity as they want.
[edit] Non-directivity
Linkline does not tell service users what course of action to take, but does talk through their options with them, so that they can make their own decision. This way they are able to find their own solution based on their understanding of the issue, not someone else’s interpretation.
[edit] Non-judgmental
No matter what may have happened, or what service users want to talk about, Linkline does not judge any caller. Linkline is an independent body with no religious or political affiliation, and no outside influences of any sort.
[edit] Drop in service
Linkline offers a drop in service in addition to the phone service. People are welcome to drop into the office between 7pm and 11pm. The office is located in St. Edward’s Passage which is very central but also a step off the main thoroughfare, so it is easy to drop in privately. From the Market Square, St Edward’s Passage is located down the left hand side of the HSBC bank.
[edit] Training
All Linkline's volunteers undergo extensive training before they take any calls and are provided with follow up training throughout the year, including specialised exam-stress training. The volunteers, however, are not trained counsellors and therefore do not offer advice or counsel service users but allow them to talk things through.
