[edit] merge proposal
This article covers the same subject as Lightning (sailboat), although the latter is more complete. Since other boat-related articles listed in the Category "Dinghies" are named in the form of Thisboatname (Dinghy), I propose that the contents of Lightning (sailboat) should be merged into this article BrownHairedGirl 17:00, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
* Agreed. Boatman 19:36, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed: I think "LIghtning (Sailboat)" Should be the article name. Minnesota1 14:46, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
* Agreed, it should be merged, but it should be Lightning (Dinghy). It really is a dinghy. Mrees1997 23:42, 27 April 2006 (UTC)
- Agreed, there should not be two articles, and they should be merged. I think it would be more appropriate to name the article "Lightning (sailboat)." The Lightning is not a dinghy! It is a recognised by the class as a "centerboard sloop" and is a high performance race boat. The boat deserves a good article! Epstein.Mark 20:15, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
* Agree. The 2 articles are quite similar and therfore redundant. They should be merged. The term "dinghy" is commonly used to describe small craft of this type. Although this may not be entirely accurate I think it is accepted. Upon reviewing the International Lightning Class homepage I could not find the term "dinghy". They refer to the lightning as a "family day-sailor and racing boat". The (sailboat) suffix is a good generic term that could be used for the page's name. The (dinghy) suffix should be kept as a re-direct/ search-term that points to the article.
* Agreed, merge it into "sailboat." I have seen the "dinghy" designation used for racing classifcation purposes, to separate centerboard boats like the Lightning from keelboats like the Star (sailboat). But I have never once told someone "I own a dinghy" when they asked me to describe my Lightning. Since this is a general information page, I think "sailboat" is more accurate.--Jhwitt 18:51, 16 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] link spam
To my mind, linking to a builder of a boat is just link spam and is not encyclopedic. It's similar to how there are not direct links from other commercially available items makers. As such, I propose we remove it. Pdbailey 01:17, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes, a list of lightning builders can be obtained from lightningclass.org, which already has a link posted. Nevermind1534 03:46, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:LightningSailboat.JPG
Image:LightningSailboat.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
