[edit] Free information

It seems that "libre knowledge" is an alternate (maybe better) term for free information or free knowledge. Thus this article and free content should be merged. Gronky 09:37, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

Perhaps, though I am not sure how. There is a crucial difference.
All parties are concerned with the same contemporary issues.
"Free Knowledge" redirects to Libre Knowledge - i.e. they are synonymous.
"Free information" redirects to free content - i.e. they are also synonymous.
The two articles (Libre Knowledge and Free content) cross-reference each other (under See Also).
The difference is that free/libre knowledge also applies to tacit knowledge,
whereas free information/content can only apply to explicit knowledge.

[edit] Freedom of Knowledge

There is a discussion about introducing "Freedom of Knowledge" in addition to traditional rights like "Freedom of Speech". The German section of Wikipedia has a corresponding article de:Wissensfreiheit. Free Software implies the libre knowledge of its code. And Open Access is a neccessary (but not sufficient) condition for Freedom of Knowledge. Maybe, elaborate on that....

* Access to educational documents should be public.
But also its further improvement must be allowed by means of a free license.
* Public files should be available in free formats that are not dependent on any
software or company. These file formats should be free of patents, well documented, and
possibly (compressed) text or xml files.
* Public schools should preferably use free and open source software to enable pupils
  * to use trained software at home legally and without extra expenses
  * to make the outcome of their work be free in all dimensions (technically besides licensing)
  * to enable their participation in the community of libre knowledge and free and open source.
