Liana Fiol Matta is the most junior Associate Justice of the currently five-member Puerto Rico Supreme Court. Appointed by Governor Sila Calderón in 2004 to succeed the court's first female Justice, her nomination was confirmed in a partisan vote by the Puerto Rico Senate.

Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she was a high-profile member of Puerto Rico's Court of Appeals.

Still in her early 50s, she is expected to have a long-lasting effect in court decisions for the next generation, especially if the constitutionally-mandated retirement age of 70 is modified before she reaches that age.
