Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial is a Group 3 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old thoroughbred fillies. It is run over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres) at Leopardstown Racecourse in April.

The race moved to Leopardstown in 1991 following the closure of its former venue Phoenix Park, where it was run as the 1,000 Guineas Trial and sponsored by Harp Lager. It was promoted to Group 3 status in 2005 having been previously classed as a Listed race. A similar race, the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial, takes place at Leopardstown in May.

The winners Kooyonga, Classic Park and 2001 runner-up Imagine all subsequently won the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh, while in 2005 Virginia Waters went on to win the English 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket.
