Leoncio Basbaum

Leôncio Basbaum (1907 – 1969) was born in the state of Pernambuco the child of Jewish immigrants from Ukraine. He qualified as a Medical doctor in Rio de Janeiro in 1929. He become involved in the Brazilian Communist Party after graduating and dedicated the rest of his life to the cause. He wrote a seminal work on the Brazilian history from a Marxist perspective and is considered one of Brazil's most important historians.
