[edit] How

How did this Oblast manage to keep up its Communist name, in a country that was trying to rid itself of Communism? Kaiser matias 07:51, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

When Leningrad was being renamed, it was a matter of big controversy. There were quite a few people who did not want the city renamed at all. So, in the end, when Leningrad became St. Petersburg, the oblast retained its old name as a compromise. Same thing happened to Sverdlovsk Oblast (the administrative center of which is Yekaterinburg).—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 14:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)
You see, Kaiser matias, the name of Leningrad isn't only associated with Communism but also with some tragic events of the World War II, I mean the Siege of Leningrad. So that's why it is still popular. And may be it's off-topic but I'd like to say that it is doubtful if our life has become much more better since we "rid ourselves of Communism".
