A "well done" to the writers for this article, notably User:GRAHAMUK. My father knew Len Beadell in the 1950s at Woomera, South Australia and, from my father's tales, they were at least to some extent friends. This meant that I heard second-hand about Beadell's exploits and the long periods he spent off surveying, either alone or with the highway construction teams. Of course, Beadell surveyed ahead of the team, so he was alone even when notionally with a team. I grew up with a copy of Too Long in the Bush and his other books around the house; and, I read them.
