One of the most enduring hoaxes in Wikipedia has to be the occult author Argusto Emfazie. It was created by an anon in 2002, diligently wikified by various users, spread to all sorts of WP mirrors, and got finally deleted in 2006: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Argusto Emfazie. Mr Emfazie was quite notable in terms of google hits, despite being non-existent for all we know.
