Leipzig-Altenburg Airport, until February 2008 known as Altenburg-Nobitz Airport (IATA: AOCICAO: EDAC) is a German regional airport 6 km (3.73 miles) southeast of Altenburg and 42 km (26.1 miles) south of Leipzig in the state of Thuringia. It is the 2nd-largest airport in Thuringia. In 2007, it served almost 140,000 passengers.

The Airport was built in 1913. Leipzig-Altenburg was a Russian military airport from 1945 until 1992. The newly founded Flugplatz Altenburg-Nobitz GmbH took over the airport in 1992. The first charter flight took place in 1996 to Malta.

The only scheduled user of the airport is Irish budget airline Ryanair, which operates a very popular daily service to London Stansted and a three times weekly service to Girona. As of January 2008, Altenburg is the only airport serving Leipzig which has flights to the United Kingdom.

[edit] Ground transportation

A shuttle bus operates from Leipzig Main Station to the airport. The journey takes around 1 hour 15 minutes and costs €12 one way. The bus times are scheduled to coincide with the times of the flights. The same bus service also connects the town of Altenburg with the airport.
