The Leinster School's Senior Challenge Cup is the premier rugby union competition for secondary schools affiliated to the Leinster Branch of the IRFU. First held in 1887, the cup celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2007.

Attendances are high for a schoolboy competition with up to 25,000 present at the final. This match traditionally takes place on Saint Patrick's Day at Lansdowne Road. This year the final will be played at the RDS, on the 16th March, due to construction of a new stadium at Lansdowne Road.

Historically Blackrock College is the most successful school in the cup's history having lifted the cup 65 times, followed by Belvedere College and Terenure College with 10 Wins, Castleknock College, with 8 Wins, Clongowes Wood College with 6 Wins and St. Mary's College with 5 Wins. [1]

The Cup, and the Schools who play for it, have a history of producing fine rugby players, many of whom go on to play for Ireland. Players such as Denis Hickey who captained his St. Mary's College team to win the cup in 1994, and Gordon D'Arcy have impressive senior cup records. The most international players produced have come from Blackrock College with players like Brian O'Driscoll, Victor Costello and recently Luke Fitzgerald.

In the last 30 Years since 1978 12 different schools have contested the finals but only 6 schools have lifted the cup. Interestingly in those 30 finals, Blackrock have contested 16, Clongowes 13, Terenure 12, Belvedere 6, St.Marys 5, St.Michaels 4, DLS Churchtown 3 plus 5 others have made single appearances. The biggest margin of victory in a recent final was in the 1996 cup when Blackrock College beat Newbridge College by 37 Points (6 tries) to 3, however the greatest margin in the history of Cup finals was in 1900 when Blackrock College beat Corrig School 63 - 0.[1]

Two captains have gained the distinction of lifting the cup twice, Jonny Mion (Blackrock College) in 1989 and 1990 and Barry Gibney (Blackrock College) in 1995 and 1996.[1]

The best scoring performance by a single player was given by the future Irish international Victor Costello (Blackrock College) when he scored 10 tries in the 1989 Cup.
