Legacy Family Tree is a genealogy software program for Windows. The Standard Edition is distributed, with no restrictions, as freeware. Users may pay a fee to "unlock" the additional features in the Deluxe Edition.
Legacy is a full-featured genealogy program that assists family historians in tracking, organizing, printing, and sharing family history. The user interface is intuitive, and both the program and the extensive help files are updated regularly. A printed manual and several tutorial videos are available in English; the program itself and the help files are available in several languages, referred to as International releases.
The input form for individuals includes room for vital information plus an unlimited number of events, notes, and pictures. Navigation of the database is primarily through the Family View and Pedigree View screens. The program can create literally dozens of reports including the typical ancestor and descendant charts as well as relationship diagrams, timelines, surname summaries, census forms, and family history books (complete with tables of contents and indexes). Most reports have the option to include photographs. There is a To Do List. Web page creation is possible in a variety of formats. Name tags can be printed with pictures and tiny 3-generation pedigree charts on them.
Legacy has advanced merge capabilities and when two files are open, one can drag and drop entire lines from one to the other. The IntelliShare feature allows groups of two or more people to coordinate their work and stay caught up on each other's changes. Multimedia support includes pictures, sound clips, and videos which can be displayed individually, in slide shows or as screen savers. The program imports and exports standard GEDCOM files and also files from Personal Ancestral File (PAF). Links to the Internet allow searching for any person in the family file among billions of names.
Other features include search and replace, spell checking of all notes, source documentation features and relationship calculation. Members of the LDS church can produce TempleReady reports.
Legacy Family Tree sponsors an annual cruise which includes seminars on topics related to genealogy and on the use of the software. Itinerary for the July 2008 cruise: London (Dover), Copenhagen, Berlin (Warnemuende), St. Petersburg, Helsinki, Tallinn, Stockholm and back to Dover.
Legacy Charting gives the ability to create large-scale wall charts, including drop-down descendancies, fan charts, hourglass charts, DNA charts and several others.
