Leen Verbeek (born Leiderdorp, 1955) is a Dutch entrepreneur and politician. He is a member of the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA). He has served as mayor of Purmerend since April 2003.[1][2]
Verbeek spent his early years in Eindhoven.[3] After the MULO (current-day VMBO) and a year of high school in the USA he attended the Academie voor Educatieve Arbeid in Baarn. He then started work as a young people worker in Leiden.
Ten years later Verbeek started his political career through many political institutions, ending up as alderman in Houten (1989-1996). Until he was chosen as mayor of Purmerend in 2003 he ran his own company.
On 18 December 2007 it was announced that Verbeek was a candidate for mayor of Eindhoven along with Rob van Gijzel[4]. A referendum was held on 23 January 2008, in which Verbeek scored 33% of the votes, but because the required number of voters was not met, the referendum was nullified and the decision was made in-house, which resulted in Rob van Gijzel being appointed mayor of Eindhoven.[5]
