[edit] Reaction to AfD nomination (1)

Leah is a candidate in a current (upcoming) election. She is mentioned in the entry "27th Alberta general election" and her campaign rival "David Swann" has an entry.

Please do not delete this newsworthy posting.

Thank you!

I noticed the un-elected tag, Leah did actually win the party nomination to become the candidate in this constituancy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BigBrocktoon (talkcontribs) 21:52, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Still not elected, then. David Swann is elected. Ros0709 (talk) 22:02, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
True enough, but this is one of the most important seats for take-back by the Progressive Conservatives, and her candidacy is notable as it is the only serious, top tier party nominee to contest the notable (and in Alberta, notorious) seat in Calgary Mountain View. In short, her running against Swann, who was a suprise victor in the last election is notable in itself... BigBrocktoon (talk) 22:35, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Why does this un-elected person running in the same election not face deletion? Christina Gray BigBrocktoon (talk) 22:48, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Reaction to AfD nomination (2)

Leah Lawrence represents a refreshing change from the dominance of baby boomers in provincial politics. The notion that only established politicians should enter the Wikipedia domain would stiffle the educational and engagement value of the web. It`s time for the establishment to allow energetic and capable people like Leah lead us into the future. At no time has our natural capital been at greater threat from the unwise water management decisions past generations have made, and the risks we already face as the unavoidable impacts of climate change descend upon us. From her can-do attitude, her knowledge and experience as a practicing environmental engineer, her commitment to local issues and neighborhoods, lead represents our future and that`s why we support her and this debate!

Please see WP:SOAP. However much you feel this person is a worthy candidate (I have no connection with Canadian politics and no opinion in the matter) Wikipedia is not the place to make these points. This is an encyclopedia. Ros0709 (talk) 11:47, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

With respect, Ros0709, that doesn't make any sense. The entry isn't making those points. "Dave & Sue" made those points on this page, not in the entry. I don't think the entry is propaganda, an opinion piece, self-promotion or advertising. It's an entry on someone who was notable before she decided to run. Whether or not she's elected yet doesn't even matter. Mustang1988 (talk) 21:04, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

My comment was specifically in response to the points above, not the main article. I agree that the actual article is balanced; I made this point earlier on the AfD. Although the article is balanced my concern was always that (a) the notabilty criteria hadn't been met, and (b) that even a balanced article could be abusing Wikipedia to raise the visibility of a candidate. The comment above, of course, really didn't help because it goes somewhat against (b), even if not in the main article space. Regardless, I have requested the AfD be withdrawn - see my reasoning there - and, FWIW, I personally don't agree with the WP notability guidelines - this isn't a paper encyclopaedia and so long as there is no problem with searching I don't see why every political figure, minor band etc etc can't be included. But the rules were set by concensus and we either play by the rules or go play somewhere else! Ros0709 (talk) 21:26, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

First, Ms. Lawrence is a known writer in Calgary, a publisher of a newspaper, and co-founded Climate Change Central. She is clearly notable in her own right even if she is not elected.

Second, if there are any issues with this entry, editing is clearly the proper alternative.

Mustang1988 (talk) 21:15, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree with Mustang1988 that Leah has had notable success in her career independent of her nomination for the PCs. I am interested in climate change and believe that Leah should be listed in Wikipedia because of her expertise in this area. She has devoted much of her career to climate change issues and sustainable development and her critical role at Climate Change Central is notable, in and of itself .Climate100 (talk) 03:51, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
