[edit] Cochin China memories?

this article is nice but there is no memories about the pre-1946 era, what happened before the Republic of Cochin China and the republic was it a colony or a protectorate or an associated state or whatever? why the Republic of Cochin China (not the period before 1946) is regarded as "South Vietnam"? was it because Annam was integrated to it?
