It was founded in 1991 by a group of professionals who are dedicated to helping children, adolescents, adults, and families cope with dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD), and other learning difficulties. The psychologists, special education consultants, and speech and language consultants on staff are trained in remedial teaching and in consultation with teachers, school administrators, and parents.
The Learning Associates provides a wide range of services:
- psychological and educational assessment of elementary and secondary students and adults
- remediation and diagnostic teaching
- speech and language assessment
- support and reading groups for adults with learning disabilities
- training of university students in education and psychology
- teaching of university courses
- workshops and presentations at conferences
- publication of journal articles and books
- bilingual services
The Center also offers a range of specialized one-on-one tutoring services in English and in French for young students, adolescents and adults. Tutoring is available bilingually for reading or math help. The importance of becoming and independent learner is always stressed. Specifically in the teaching of reading, systematic exposure to learning the sound system, one of the building blocks of reading, is usually a core part of the program. Along with that, strategies to improve reading comprehension are also emphasized.
