[edit] Rebuilding

During the first decade of the twentieth century the railway experienced a considerable growth in traffic and by 1908 the class were no longer capable of hauling the heaviest trains without loss of time. Douglas Earle Marsh therefore rebuilt one example with a larger boiler in that year which was classified "C2X". All but ten of the class were similarly rebuilt over the next thirty years.

[edit] Numbering

All the locomotives passed to the Southern Railway in 1923 and most passed to British Railways in 1948.

  • LB&SCR 433-555
  • SR 2433-2555
  • BR 32434-32554 (2433, 2555 and several others had been withdrawn before 1948)

[edit] Withdrawal

The surviving C2 locomotives were all withdrawn between 1935 and 1950, but most of the C2X rebuilds lasted until the early 1960s. The last two survivors were withdrawn in February 1962.
