[edit] History

The New Denver Ministry of Broadcasting deregulated the nation's television industry in 1978. Later that year, the existing three television channels had their frequencies reshuffled to create space for two new television channels. The first space was bought by the National Nedia group to launch NTV2. The second space was sold to New Denver Independent Radio, who owned several commercial radio stations. New Denver Independent Radio had plans to launch it's own television channel, but due to financial and transmission problems, the onsold them back to the government in 1980.

East Denver's Ministry of Broadcasting deregulated their television industry and reshuffled their frequencies. At the time, East Denver only had two television channels, and the govenrment made room for four more. The first two television spaces were sold to TV3 and Four.

In 1981, it was decided by inter-government talks that a television channel covering both nations would be launched. Both governments put a set of frequencies up for tender, and in August 1981, the contract for supplying the channel was awarded to Southern Broadcasting Ltd.

In January 1982, Southern Broadcasting Ltd became the Southern Broadcasting Corporation, and started promoting the launch of Channel 5 using the promotion '5 for 82' (5/4/82). The name Channel 5 was chosen as it was the fith television channel for both countries.

At 5:50pm of 5 April 1982, Channel 5 was launched. The first thing viewers saw was the Channel 5 logo and Samantha Englefield saying "Welcome to the brand new Channel 5. Up next is a introductary programme, followed by today's news."

The launch night featured the daily news, and was foillowed by a mixure of comedy, drama, documetaries, and game shows. The launch was a big success, with 3.1 million people tuning in before the channel closed down at midnight.

In 1983, Channel 5 won its first award for best drama and best news presenter. The channel was flourishing, and by 1988, Channel 5 was averaging three programmes in the weekly Top 20 Programmes list.

In 1990, the Southern Broadcasting Corporation bought Antarctic Media Ltd, and the corporation was split into three smaller corporations: Southern Press, Southern Radio, and Southern Television. In 1993, Southern Television became the Channel 5 Television Corporation.

Channel 5 Television Corporation in 1995 bought the finacially-troubled Eastern Radio and sister station East FM. Later that year, these radio beacme 5 Radio and 5FM respectively.

1999 saw the Channel 5 launch on digital television. In 2002, Channel 5 launched 5 Extra as an entertainment channel for demographic audience aged 35 to 64. In 2003, 5 Live was launched, offering news, current affairs and general information.

In 2006, Channel 5 switched to 16:9 on digital television platforms. It is proposed that in late 2008, Channel 5 will start broadcasting in 720p HDTV.

[edit] Programming

Channel 5 is responsible for 140 hours of television a week. Like all commercial television channels in New Denver and East Denver, Channel 5 cannot broadcast between 0100 hrs and 0500 hrs.

Channel 5 recieves nearly all of its money through advertising. Advertisement breaks are long and infrequent, with the typical add break between 5 and 7 minutes in length, with one ad break at least every 15 minutes. The rest of the money comes from television licences and the government.

Channel 5 has no regional variants other than for the sake of advertising, meaning that Channel 5 must have broadcasting rights to programmes in both countries to screen programming, however, this is not as hard as it seems.

[edit] News programming

Channel 5 runs a large news organisation under the banner Channel 5 News. The department runs a three-hour morning news and current-affair programme (Breakfast), a 15-minute builetin at midday (Midday News), a 30-minute evening bulletin (Channel 5 News), a 30-minute current affairs programme (The 6:30 Report), and a 30-minute late bulliten (Tonight).

[edit] Sports programming

Channel 5 doesn't cater as much for sport as the NDBC or NTV, but does have a substatial sports depatrment. Channel 5 holds broadcasting rights for the NRC and the 2007 Rugby World Cup.
