“My temper was sometimes violent, and my passions vehement; but by some law in my temperature they were turned not towards childish pursuits but to an eager desire to learn, and not to learn all things indiscriminately.”(–Chapter 2 Paragraph 4 1st sentence) I chose the sentence because of the picture that it painted in my mind. The description about one’s anger draws a vivid picture into the mind of this person. By saying the temper is sometimes violent shows how passionate this person could be whether it be violent or not. But with that being said it also draws you to the conclusions that this person might be a little on the violent side. When someone speaks of their passions being vehement it tells me that they might be very intense, heated, and/or fervent. The next part of the sentence states that he pushed it all into an eager desire to learn, which makes me feel as if he used this temper as a good thing. By pushing something that does not seem so great into something that can be used for good makes you think this person might be a good person at heart. Sometimes in life I think that everyone might a have a “bad” quality and can turn it into good use. If people can’t do that then this world would not be nearly close to the great place we live in. (Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of things in this world that are not right or immoral, but by people not applying the right tools to the wrong emotions it could be worse.) By this character stating he does not want to learn things indiscriminately shows me that he is open minded and does not want to learn opinions, rather to learn the facts of life. It makes him should very adult like as most children would not think this way. By the author describing the character in such depth makes you want to know more about this person. Also by describing the character through the thoughts and mind rather than the appearance enables the reader to get closer to the character. By putting the reader into the characters mind you allow them to follow along the characters’ story line, and better understand the choices and actions that this character takes. And also the hardships and struggles that this character faces. After reading this passage it brings you closer to the character and the story, which in my opinion makes it more interesting and makes me want to read on. It is almost as if this character is a real-life person and the reader is getting to know him.
