Launceston _is_ pronounced lawn-ston, after living in the town for many years, i'm quite sure it is correct, although I admit many do pronounce it 'lawn-son' Benbread 19:40, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I too am from near Launceston. Pronouncing it with the 't' is as incorrect as pronouncing Greenwich as 'Green Witch' or Worcester as 'Worse ester'. It is indeed the pronunciation used by many outsiders, but it is also just plain wrong. I've amended the article to reflect the common pronunciation as against the Cornish pronunciation. -- Necrothesp 19:52, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm from Cornwall, ANd I have many friends from school that live in Launceston, but come to our school in Camelford. The corrent pronounciation by many cornish natives is "Lan-son", however most people from up country call it Lawn-son. Peterwill 13:05, 2 Aug 2006 (UTC)

In launceston, there is a variety of ways of pronounciation, as stated. Lawn-ston, lawn-son, lan-son and laan-son are all commonly used and are all widely recognised as possible pronounciations. Some residents even simply say lawn-sess-ton, although this is very unusual and not really adknowledged. Lawn-ston and lan-son are the popular pronounciations and it simply depends on which you prefer. I believe that officially it is lawn-ston, but traditionally, it is lan-son. Well, I have always know it as Lan-son, and all my family are cornish. The only people i know that pronounce is lawn-son are people that have moved down here from upcountry. The only reason some may say it Lawn-sess-ton is because that is how you pornounce the place Launceston in Tasmania. The Australian pronounciation. It comes from the name Stefanson, which wouldn't be pronounced Steff-awn-son, would it? it would be Staff-Ann-Son. Go to Launceston Castle. It has it all there. Grew up in Bude (which I pronounce b-you-d and never bewd). However Launceston I pronounce Lawn-ston if I'm not speaking with an accent and Lanson if I'm feeling local ;o).

Grew up in Cornwall (Treknow, then St Austell), Laan-son was the preferred pronunciation, especially among native Cornish people. I'm 75 per cent sure that old police traffic cones, predating the merger of Cornwall and Devon constabularies, had 'Lanson' written/printed on them. DuncanHill 13:32, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

I live in Launceston and can tell you that the town is only half a mile from the ford over the Tamar the old crossing into Cornwall. However approaching the town from Holsworthy the town is about 2 miles from the river. Please correct the page. 64.12.116.198 16:19, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
