Laurel High School (LHS) is a public high school located in Laurel, Maryland, and is the oldest school in the Prince George's County Public Schools system.[1] Founded in 1899 with an enrollment of 59 students and four teachers, the original school building is now the Phelps Community Center in Laurel. In 1963, the school moved to a larger building at 8000 Cherry Lane in Laurel, and annexed an adjacent elementary school shortly thereafter. Today, Laurel High School enrolls roughly 1,990 students in grades 9 through 12. The school mascot is the Spartan, and the school colors are blue and gold.

Fulfilling an objective of the Prince George’s County Capital Improvement Program[2] since 1989, construction on a new 800-seat auditorium for the school is expected to begin in February 2009, with the addition likely finished in time for the 2009-2010 school year.[3]

Laurel is distinguished from several other schools in the area through its Technical Academy program,[4] which offers students courses in Computer Networking, Automotive Mechanics, Cosmetology, and Nursing/Medical Careers.

Laurel High's student newspaper, The Shield, is the most decorated student paper in Prince George's County and is one of the most acclaimed in the state of Maryland.[citation needed] Since its inception in the 1995-1996 school year, The Shield has won several awards from the American Scholastic Press Association, the Columbia Scholastic Press Association,[5] and the Quill and Scroll International Society.[citation needed]

Current principal Dwayne Jones is a former Laurel High student and was a member of the last Laurel High Basketball Team to win a state title.

Since August 2007, school policy requires students to wear uniforms.
