Lateral violence is violence committed by one member of an oppressed group against other members of the oppressed group due to internalized oppression. The concept helps to explain observed violence in oppressed communities such as Aboriginal groups in Canada where violence by community members to others in the community is seen to be partly due to the intergenerational effects of colonization.
