The 1968 Olympic Games were not in Tokyo as stated. (Tokyo was the host in 1964).
In 1968, the Games were in Mexico City.
This goes some way to explain the author's implied surprise at the 30 minute discrepancy in Young's two bronze medal times. No surprise, Mexico City's 7200ft altitude was bound to adversely affect endurance events just as surely as it positively affected explosive events.
It is a tribute to the physical condition of the athletes that, even with the altitude, the winning time was still the second fastest in Olympic history at the time.
The 50km walk is the longest Olympic track and field event, almost 8km longer than the marathon.
