Talk:Lao Cai Province
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I've moved this back to the unaccented form, for two reasons. Firstly, there's the "most common name rule" - Vietnamese provinces are generally known in English without their accents. Secondly, there's the fact that we can't actually do it properly - some provinces can be put at their proper names, but others, due to software limitations, can't. (I think). I personally think it's better to have no accents than to have half the provinces named with accents and half the provinces without. Just my opinion. -- Vardion 23:56, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- There may be limitations due to English Wikipedia sticking to outdated code pages, but at least an attempt should be made at correct spelling (with the accents, as they aren't optional in Vietnamese, and crucial for pronunciation). I see no limitations for Vietnamese characters inside articles, are there any? Westernized names for Vietnamese places (such as Fansipan, Dien Bien Phu, Saigon) are a different issue, but just spelling the Vietnamese names correctly wouldn't hurt, nor make names any less recognizable. There is no point in reverting entries to incorrect spelling, this is an encyclopaedia after all! I won't edit any names though, as this seems to be an unresolved question and will hopefully be resolved when en.wikipedia.org switches to Unicode.--84.188.180.40 01:22, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
