I've got to admit, this album has really grown on me - people cite this as his attempt to produce his most commercial album, but in reality it's anything but - it goes so far in that direction, it comes back round the other side to being deeply inaccessible! What was he playing at with the drums? What on earth was he doing making the guitar sound so thin? Why so much synthesised brass? And why only synthesised bass? The result is a very unique musical pallette for Neil, and the production on these tracks means they sound absolutely nothing like anything else either before or since. People who hate this album would tend to think that's a good thing, but it really is a curiousity and, from my experience, the more time you spend with it, the better it gets. The tour in support of this album was a feedback drenched garage band burn-off, so that makes the album even more marked in its departure. I now instead think of it as a genre piece much in the vein of the blues of This Note's... or the country of 'Old Ways'.
