Important achievements: In 1984, Brahimi became an under-secretary general of the Arab League, a position that brought him into close contact with Iraq's Baathist regime. In 1989, Brahimi was appointed the special envoy of the Arab League's Tripartite committee to Lebanon, where he succeeded in negotiating a cease-fire between Syria and the forces of Lebanon's General Michel Aoun. While recent media reports have credited him with brokering the Taif Accord, signed by Lebanese parliament members in October of that year, his role in the negotiations was secondary H-CTR 16:43, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Discrepancies with Arabic script?

Why is the Arabic script version of his name given as الأخضر الإبراهيمي , which would seem to have several more syllables than "Lakhdar Brahimi" does? Wouldn't الإبراهيمي usually be transcribed as Ibrahimi, or Al-Ibrahimi? Or is the English version of his name given according to colloquial Algerian dialect, while the Arabic version is spelled according to Classical Arabic rules? It's odd...
