Lake of the Pines is a census-designated place (CDP) in Nevada County, California, United States. The population was 3,956 at the 2000 census.

Lake of the Pines is located at 39°2′19″N, 121°3′41″W (39.038571, -121.061354)[1].

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.8 km²), of which, 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km²) of it (18.48%) is water. Lake of the Pines is located in the foothils of California.

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 3,956 people, 1,554 households, and 1,252 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 2,634.1 people per square mile (1,018.3/km²). There were 1,652 housing units at an average density of 1,100.0/sq mi (425.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 96.46% White, 0.15% African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.19% of the population.

There were 1,554 households out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.0% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.4% were non-families. 16.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.83.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 22.9% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 18.6% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 27.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 47 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $52,105, and the median income for a family was $55,861. Males had a median income of $46,500 versus $32,155 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $23,357. About 4.7% of families and 5.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.1% of those under age 18 and 4.5% of those age 65 or over.

In the state legislature Lake of the Pines is located in the 4th Senate District, represented by Republican Sam Aanestad, and in the 4th Assembly District, represented by Republican Ted Gaines. Federally, Lake of the Pines is located in California's 4th congressional district, which has a Cook PVI of R +11[3] and is represented by Republican John Doolittle.
