[edit] Geography

The municipality is located just east of the capital, Oslo, with many main roads going through it. Almost all the inhabitants live in the northern part of Lørenskog. The southern parts consist of forest, while farms and grain field occupy the space in between. An important train station is situated in the district. Within Lørenskog, Losby is known for its waterwheel, which is represented in the municipal badge of Lørenskog. Some of Losby is today a golf course, along with lakes and farms.

[edit] Renovation

As of 2006, workers have begun renovating the center of Lørenskog, also called the "Metro Senter". This renovation includes a considerably larger shopping mall, a bus terminal with buses going in and out of Oslo every 15 minutes, perhaps a subway station and the new Mailand Upper Secondary School. The completion of this renovation is estimated to be in the summer of 2008.

[edit] The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old (and no longer existent) farm Leirheimr. The first element is leirr, 'clay', and the last element is heimr, 'homestead' or 'farm'. Thus: 'the farm built on clay ground'. The addition is skógr meaning 'wood', and the meaning of the whole name is 'the woodlands around the farm Leirheimr.'

Until 1918 the name was written "Lørenskogen".

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1957). It shows a waterwheel. (The timber saws, driven by waterwheels, used to be important for the municipality.)
