Kuala Lumpur competed in the Premier League and FA Cup but failed to qualify for the Malaysia Cup in season 2005-06.
Injuries to key players put a dent in KL's hopes of securing promotion as they faded in the finishing straight of the league, losing six of their last nine matches. Coach Mat Zan Mat Aris, in charge for a third consecutive season, was denied the services of the oft-injured Brazilian striker Marcelo Padilha Da Rocha, who after scoring 30 goals in the 2004 season, only managed five this season. KL also lost the services of young striker Safee Sali, who transferred to Sarawak in the close season after emerging as KL's top scorer with 11 goals in the 2005 season.
