Waddams Grove also known as Wadam's, Waddam's Grove, and Sada in the past, is an unincorporated community in the Stephenson County township of West Point, Illinois, USA, that was the first settlement in all of Stephenson County. Waddams Grove is located a little northwest of of Lena.

[edit] History

Towards the end of the summer of 1832, William Waddams and his sons Hiram and Nelson arrived in Stephenson County and founded Waddams Grove following the Black Hawk War.[1] This created the first permanent settlement in the county, and paved the way for future settlements in the county.[1] William moved his entire family from Jo Daviess County in the spring of 1833 to the new settlement, and built his home there.[1] William would stay in the community until his death after having moved from so many places including Indiana, Peoria, and Galena.[1] This settlement is viewed as being the launching spot of all settlements in Stephenson County with most settlers stopping at Waddams Grove before moving on to their claims.[1]

Over the course of the next four years from when the settlement was established, it continued to see strong growth.[1] When Stephenson County was established in 1837, Waddams was not one of the settlements selected for the possible county seat.[1] Eventually the settlement received its first US Post Office on March 31, 1838, and would continue to funciton as the village of Waddams Grove until July 28, 1859.[2] The village changed its name to Wadam's, and then again changed its name to Sada.[2] Sada changed its name back to Waddams Grove on January 14, 1876, and that is the name the community remains to this day.[2]
