The Type 15A Kolkata class destroyers are the latest stealth destroyers with land attack capability, being built for the Indian Navy.[1] They were originally to be known as the Bangalore class. The Navy plans to have six ships of this class in the fleet,[2] a total of three ships of this class have been ordered and is being built at the Mazagaon dockyard.[3] The keel laying of the first destroyer INS Kolkata took place on Sep 27, 2003. The work on the second ship started on 25 October 2005 and that of the third destroyer on 21 February 2006.[4] The first ship is expected to join the fleet in 2010, followed by the second ship in 2011 and the third ship in May 2012. Further three ships are planned under Project 15B.
