   Okay, so most people have probably seen hockey in action at one time or another. Well, this is a little page about HOW to actually play it! This might also be helpful is you know absolutely nothing about it . . . =D

Lines: There are 5 basic lines. There are two goal lines (located on the same line as the goal), two blue lines (mark offsides), and one red line, right in the middle of the ice. This line has the main faceoff circle where the first faceoff of the game is situated AND . . . this is where the faceoff happens right after a goal is scored, no matter which net it was scored on.

   So you may be asking . . . what's offsides and faceoffs? That comes next.

Offsides: They have this rule in soccer, lacrosse, pretty much any sport you can think of. But in ice hockey it's a bit different. If you don't have the puck, you CANNOT go over the blue line unless the person who has the puck is already over the blue line. This "offsides" happens on the FAR blue line, the line furthest away from your goal. NOT the near blue line. Sometimes, depending on leagues and such, there is either AUTOMATIC offsides or DELAYED offsides. Delayed offsides gives you about 10 seconds to get back onsides if you are actually offsides. Automatic is, well . . . automatic, meaning if your offsides, the referees just blow the whistle and that's that. Faceoffs: If something like a goal is scored, the goalie saves a goal, a penalty occurs, or someone goes offsides, you have yourself a faceoff. But in order to understand faceoffs completely, let's go over positions briefly.

ICE HOCKEY POSITIONS: It's EXTREMELY vital that you know the positions of hockey. I probably should have gone over this first and foremost, but . . . sorry about that! Anyway, here's a quick diagram of where you usually should be depending on the position you are viewing OR if you are playing hockey!

   This is where you should be located on a faceoff, depending on the position. If you want a more detailed diagram of both teams AND goalies, here's one!

   There we are! The positions of ice hockey. Ahhh . . . =D So those are the absolute and TOTAL basics. Let's move on, shall we? =]

Skating: If you don't know how to skate, 10 times out of 10 you will not succeed to your expectations in ice hockey! Skating really is the name of the game. Let's say you're a professional hockey coach, looking at two very talented kids fresh out of college. One of them can stick-handle like the wind and deeks people like it's no problem. But they can't skate like some other people can. Then you have this kid who can skate so fast it's like lightning, but can't stick-handle THAT great. Who do you think you'll choose? Most of the time the coach will pick the better skater. Stick handling and skating can always be improved, but usually it's easier to improve stick-handling over skating. Skating is something you really need to get down pat.
