Gove was born in Glasgow but moved to Aberdeen at the age of three. Her mother was a teacher (who is now an occasional supply teacher) and her step-father is a retired teacher. Within a year, Gove became the presenter of a regional sports programme and was an occasional presenter of North Tonight. She became a regular North Tonight presenter in 1998. During her time at the station, Gove has presented other regional programmes including Testimony, Off The Wall, Inquisition, The Buck Stops Here, Grampian Weekend and Grampian Midweek. She has also worked at Westminster as a production journalist.

Now part-time, Gove is also a presenter/producer for STV North's video blog Northern Exposure, regularly answering questions arising from the popular feedback strand, "Ask Kirstin".

She is married with two children.
