Kirkham (HM Prison)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kirkham Open Prison is located southwest of Kirkham, Lancashire. It is situated on Freckleton road and next to a residential area.

The prison is a category D training prison with accommodation for up to 628 adult male inmates.[1] It occupies the site of a former RAF technical training centre. The facility was taken over by the Home Office in the early 1960s and has been in use as a prison since 1962. With few exceptions the infrastructure and services together with the buildings are of World War II vintage, though prisoner accommodation is relatively new.[2] The original inmate accommodation consists of twenty-one single storey blocks, laid out in two parallel East-West lines, denoted A, B, C and D Wings. Since 1990 additional blocks have been built.

Inmates have usually committed low level crimes such as fraud, tax evasion or other crimes of that nature.
