Old Western Inkereland settlement inhabited by Finno Baltic Vatjas, Inkerikkos and Aests (Ests) since 100 BC. Located on the lower course of Laukaanjoki. At first mentioned in medieval times in 1222 and 1224 when German Knights tried to capture the wooden fortification of Jaama. In 1241 batpized Filip Pelguin (Pelkonen), an Inkerikko (Izhora) tribal chief repulsed again the attack of the Teutonic Knights at Jaama. The Germans named it Jamburg in old German literature. The Novgorodians appeared later in the Jaama. They had to built a fortress to Jaama in 1384 to secure their positions in rebelling Vatjaland. The Russians start their history of Jaama (Jem) from this point.
