Phantasy Star II - Kinds's Adventure was one of a series of 8 text adventure videogames that was available to owners of the Sega Meganet, a modem for the Sega Mega Drive in Japan. It was also released as part of a compilation on Sega CD. Since the Meganet modem never achieved worldwide availability, this game never saw a very wide audience. A few years ago, ROMs have been ripped from the Mega CD version of these games. So far, the translation team M.I.J.E.T. has translated three out of eight of them, Kinds's Adventure being one of them.

Like all other games in the series, Kinds's Adventure documents a moment in the past of one of the eight playable characters in Phantasy Star II. Kainz Ji An (Kinds in this game, or "Josh Kain" as he's commonly known as in English) is the main character of this particular chapter. Like most Text Adventure games, the gameplay mainly consists of moving the character through area's, talking to people, looking at objects, obtaining items, and occasionally fighting someone. Fighting is done by random dice rolls, multiplied by the attack value of the weapon that's being used to attack with.

[edit] About Kinds

  • Japanese: カインズ・ジ・アン (Kainzu)
  • Full name: Kainz Ji An
  • English name: Josh Kain
  • Race Palman
  • Age 18 (During the events of this game)
  • Job Mechanic, later Wrecker
  • Birthday December 9th, AW 1263

Kinds loves Mecha, and always aspired to become a mechanical engineer. Usually, he is indeed very skilled in working with electronics. He has a fair amount of knowledge on how electrical devices and robots function, builds small devices, fixes appliances, and even learned to hack computers. However, Kinds is also scatterbrained and clumsy. Because of this, whatever it is he tries to fix ends up being broken even worse than it started out as. Eventually, after one particularly disastrous repair job (documented in this very game), he gave up trying to be an engineer. Instead, he decided to put his "talent" to use in another way; trashing electronics.

[edit] Story

This game takes place in Autumn of AW 1281, about three years before the events that take place in Phantasy Star II, and gives the player some insight on how exactly Kinds became a technology-wrecker, as well as why he even heads off to Paseo to join Rolf in fighting Mother Brain in the first place.

[edit] Other notable characters

  • Sue – A girl that seems to fancy Kinds, and helps him whenever she can. You'll control her for a short while in this game.
  • Yuuki – Kinds' next door neighbor, and good friend. Helps Kinds to gather data for his Psy-Gun.
  • Melville – The leader of a gang of rebels. His crew is out to destroy Mother Brain, and need Kinds' services as a wrecker.
