Kilvelur is a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is 12 km east of Tiruvarur, 12 km west of Nagapattinam and 6 km west of Sikkal a famous Muruga shrine. It is famous for its magnificient Akshyalingaswamy temple that was glorified in the immortal song of Muthuswami Dikshitar - Akshaya Linga Vibho in the Ragam Shankarabharanam

As of 2001 India census[1], Kilvelur had a population of 7404. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kilvelur has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kilvelur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.
