Kilaulay
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kilaulay (Scottish Gaelic: Cill Amhlaidh[1] / Cill Amhlaigh[2]) is a crofting township on the island of South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland.[1] Kilaulay is located on the NW corner of the island, situated about 2.5 km west of Eochar.[1]
Cill Amhlaidh, (Anglicized as Aulay's Church), may be named after a Norse called Olaf as there is no record of a Gaelic saint of the name Amhlaidh.[2] Amhlaidh / Amhlaigh is a Gaelicization of the Norse name Olaf.[2]
There was a tradition that Saint Bliannan brought holy soil from Rome to South Uist and scattered the sacred earth on the site of the ancient church of Kilaulay.[3]
