This article is lacking references, and it seems to be more of a historical discussion than an actual encyclopedic entry on the title Khedive. Vermi 22:10, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

How could it be anything other than a historical discussion. The Khedive is a historical title, it has not existed for almost a century. --NikolaiLobachevsky 22:42, 6 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Introduction of the Title Khedive

The title Khedive was not in use in Egypt until it was introduced in 1867. Despite being the most powerful provincial governor and having dynastic rights to Egypt, Ismail has no precedence in Ottoman rank over even the governor of the most insignificant province. In exchange for a huge increase in the annual tribute, he obtained the new title, which raised him above the other governors. I have changed the article to reflect this.
