Featured picture candidate

Im somewhat puzzled as to why this image: [[1]] was not promoted, after all a marginal consensus of support was achieved. There were threee "support" and two "object" tags and one "comment, yet the article was not promoted even though the support tags represented public opinion. Could you please explain to me why it was not promoted? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ahadland1234 (talkcontribs).

  • Hi! Featured picture promotion usually requires a two-thirds supermajority and four or more supporting votes. In this case, the image had only three supporting votes and a simple majority after twelve days of discussion. You may renominate the image at WP:FPC if you feel that the candidate received too little attention. --KFP (talk | contribs) 16:24, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Can i be cheeky and ask you to do that for me, becuase im too stupid. I just think its a really good picture and deserves to be featured. Could i by any chance get your views on whether it should be Featured, maybe you can help me get it on the front page :-P Ahadland 22:29, 2 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Yes, I can do the renomination for you. I'm not sure if the image will pass as it is not as sharp or detailed as many other featured picture candidates. However, consensus may find this lack of image quality acceptable because the subject is unique and getting a better photo may be very difficult. --KFP (talk | contribs) 00:58, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
      • Thank you very much for helping with the re-nomination —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ahadland1234 (talkcontribs).
  • Okay, here it is. --KFP (talk | contribs) 13:33, 3 January 2007 (UTC)
Is the consensus good enough to make the picture featured yet? Ahadland 21:57, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Nope, the nom has to be listed for at least seven days. --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:49, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
Its been a week, can it be featured yet? :) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ahadland1234 (talkcontribs) 10:32, 11 January 2007 (UTC).

Edit request for Template:FPCresult

Could you please make a (hopefully) non-controversial edit to Template:FPCresult?

<includeonly>[[Category:Ended featured picture nominations]]</includeonly>

The rationale being that such category membership would enable WP:FPC to run on a DynamicPageList and get rid of the need for Step 2.5 in nomination procedure. Noclip 17:10, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Sorry, I can't as I am not an admin. --KFP (talk | contribs) 18:23, 4 January 2007 (UTC)
    • Wow, really? I thought only admins could promote images. My bad. Noclip 20:14, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the barnstar

Thank you for your kind recognition. I find page moves quite enjoyable, and it's great to know that others also appreciate the work I'm doing. Cheers! -GTBacchus(talk) 01:37, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Explanation and reasoning for 'Brummel brew'

This article is relevant to support the lore of Microsoft and events in the company's history with its employees. It is considered a milestone in employee morale, and is not a term invented by a small group. It is widely know amongst 70,000 employees. Please consider removing the proposal for deletion. If necessary I will create a Lisa Brummel page and include this item. Let me know what you think. Thanks. Marktalkington 12:19, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

  • Alright, I have removed the prod. However, the article has to be improved in order to meet Wikipedia's guidelines and policies on notability and verifiability. --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:42, 19 January 2007 (UTC)
  • Thanks much. Since I'm a newbie, any advice you can lend is appreciated. And I will read the above links this weekend. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mark Talkington (talkcontribs).

Eh? No, those facts were correct, why do you think they were not? Zserango 00:00, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

  • You added "Helsinki is the fourth largest city in Europe after Moscow, London and Reykjavik (each with populations exceeding 4 million)." Helsinki is certainly not the fourth largest city in Europe, and Reykjavik has population of about 115,000-200,000. --KFP (talk | contribs) 00:04, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

64.9.29.115 Here

I must aplogize, this is a American high school populated with many idiotic people who feel the need to do stupid pranks. I am sorry you had to fix this. I ask that this IP be banned from editing wikipedia. Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.9.29.115 (talk) 19:03, 1 February 2007 (UTC).

  • Ah, ok, no problem. I have tagged the IP as belonging to the Tyrone Area School District. The address will be blocked if the vandalism continues. --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:11, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

uw-vandalism4

Thanks for catching that vandalism. You got to it before I could fix it, but not before I tagged a page with it. I have to admit, though, that it seems like a good idea... In any case, should we at least soft-protect those templates? --Mdwyer 19:57, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Yes, I agree. These warnings are high-risk templates and I'll request protection for them. I will also go through the user talk namespace edits between 19:45 and 19:50 to see if anyone else used this template during that time. --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:06, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
I already requested for vandalism4 specifically and left a note with the uw project. There's a discussion there already about wx to semi-protect or not. I hope they'll sprotect immediately and worry about the rest later. --Mdwyer 20:09, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Memberlist organization for WP:PSP

Hi! First off, thanks for your hard work at WP:PSP. I joined recently and have been trying to help with organizational stuff.

I noticed that you recently re-sorted the WP:PSP member list alphabetically. It's not a very big deal, but I think we can actually present more information by listing members chronologically, as it was. This way, viewers can get a rough idea of when each member joined, which would be extremely difficult by parsing through edit histories. In contrast, organizing the list alphabetically removes this information and doesn't seem to add much.

Also, I believe that chronological member lists are more common, especially for projects of this size. I don't think that there is any actual guideline regarding this, however.

Instead of reverting your edit and possibly creating a misunderstanding, I wanted to bring this up with you first. Any thoughts or preferences?

Thanks, -Fadookie Talk 08:53, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Hi! That's okay with me, I'll restore the chronological order. Cheers! --KFP (talk | contribs) 15:47, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Move of WikiProject History of Bangladesh to Wikipedia: namespace

Hi there,

Thanks for the move! I was actually busy creating Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh as a copy of WikiProject History of Bangladesh in an attempt to help User:Aditya Kabir (who posted {{helpme}}) figure out why the {{todo}} template didn't work as expected, planning to {{db-author}} the original page, because I wasn't certain whether it is possible to move from mainspace to another namespace; but now I know. I ran into an edit conflict when you moved the page, which confused the crap out of me, but all seems okay now. :)

One question: Do you think the redirect from WikiProject History of Bangladesh to Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh should stay, or rather not?

Thanks. —XhantarTalk 12:10, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

  • Heh, I was following the {{helpme}} request, too. :) The cross namespace redirect should probably be deleted, I'll tag it. --KFP (talk | contribs) 12:22, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for moving Wikipedia:WikiProject History of Bangladesh. I am new at this and, with all the good intentions, I might need enormous amount of help. Thanks, man, thanks a lot. Aditya Kabir 12:11, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Loudspeaker peer review request

I've requested the article Loudspeaker to have peer review. I noticed it was pretty good and might deserve a GA status. If you can take a look at it too and help evaluate and improve it's quality, that would be great. The peer review tag can be found on the article's talk page. --Davidkazuhiro 10:25, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

Code conflict with babel userboxes

It seems that on the User:Aditya Kabir/Biography page the babel useboxes are conflicting with the images I put in. Every time I remove the babel the images show up where I put them. But, when I put the babel back in they change position to places on the page. Can you tell me what's happening, or do something about it? Please, bear with my ignorance of this code thing. Me and another user

I've always had problems with Someguy0830 since 2005. Personally, I think that he is very selfish when it comes to editing the Naruto articles. He likes them only the way he wants them. Example: I wanted to add a certain signature technique to Orochimaru (Naruto), but he says 'no that signature technique is in the "anime only"' (japanese animation show, not the japanese comic). Since when are we only going by the manga comics and not the show? He says that it isn't notable enough even though it is used a grand total of three times in the animation show, just as the Hidden Shadow Snake (on Orochimaru's list) is used three times. I've had other problems with him, but can you help us settle this first? Power level (Dragon Ball) 22:06, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

After the first matter is taken care of, can you help me solve this matter as well? I'll be back later! Power level (Dragon Ball) 22:26, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
  • Well, I suggest that you try to resolve the dispute by explaing your thoughts at Talk:Orochimaru (Naruto) and Talk:Kakashi Hatake and discussing the disputed edits with Someguy0830 and other involved editors there and hopefully you will reach an understanding. I cannot really "take sides" in this argument as I am not at all familiar with Naruto. Let me know if you cannot reach a consensus through discussion or if you have further questions. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:55, 22 February 2007 (UTC)

Link to .ogg file at "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2"

Greetings,

Thanks for answering my call for help regarding the link to the audio file of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. However, problems persist! When I click "play in browser", the music begins quite promptly, but is broken into small fragments (about one-half second each), many of them repeated as if on an old, scratched vinyl record...with silences of similar duration between fragments. Sometimes the music will "backtrack" a few bars, and eventually grinds to a halt within the first small section.

The file plays beautifully in "My Music", and I have installed all the necessary Java tools and oggcodecs to allow it play on Windows Media Player 10. (It also works if I use the "download and play directly" link on the "JOrbis Player Beta for Wikimedia" page...but the download takes more than an hour.) I have also read every Help Page I can find!!!

Is it possible that this system simply does not work on Dial-Up? (I live in the country, so there are few choices.) Or might my Java updates or oggcodecs be flawed downloads?

I should also mention that I use Firefox as my default browser. When I checked it with IE7 tonight, the old version of the page was still there, will the old audio link. After a bit of work, I was able to see the new version (which I believe you added). I tested it, on IE7, and had the same results there.

Is there not a system while will work for slow Internet connections?

Thanks for your time and attention. Prof.rick 07:35, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

Hi, I can't test the "play in browser" feature right now as my browser doesn't support the JOrbisPlayer, but the file works fine if I download it and use my standalone audio player to listen to it. I think what you are experiencing may be a buffering problem related to the low bandwidth of the dial-up internet connection: The duration of the recording is about thirteen minutes, but downloading the 14 megabytes of data over dialup takes much longer which means that the modem cannot keep up with the audio stream. Hungarian Rhapsody - Thanks

Thanks for your help. I guess the problem is buffering, when using dial-up. Makes sense. Prof.rick 05:12, 25 February 2007 (UTC)

My two comments

I discussed Ottoman Empire history in Rumi page, but Rumi did not live in Ottoman Empire, so I think my discussion was at wrong place. Second, I answered "does anyone know when some of these reforms(Atatürk reforms) changed back?" question, but this is not about the content of that article, but a general question, I regret I have answered that question. These are only 2 examples, but sometimes I do not like my comments on talk pages.Ayasi 19:44, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, those comments seemed quite harmless to me. If you change your mind about something, you can always strike out text or leave a new comment, or if the comment is clearly in the wrong place or inappropriate, you can delete it. Old comments can be archived "out of sight". For more, see Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 20:03, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for teaching me the proper way to upload and post pictures on Wikipedia articles. I gave my first attempt at doing this on the king rising article. Could you tell me if this image is placed correctly and suitable for the page? Thanks. ..::Virchu 22:28, 26 February 2007 (UTC)

It seems otherwise ok but the image itself is just a downsampled version of Image:Kingrisinglevitation2.nwr.jpg. Did you really take the picture yourself? --KFP (talk | contribs) 22:46, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
  • I'm sorry, I don't recall claiming to have taken this picture? Also, how do you search pictures already posted on Wikipedia? Thanks ..::Virchu 22:49, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I just noticed that you used the {{PD-self}} image copyright tag (which states "I, the creator of this work, hereby release it into the public domain...") on the image page. That tag is for cases where the uploader and creator of the image are the same person. As for searching, Wikipedia doesn't actually have an effective search engine for images. Cheers, --KFP (talk | contribs) 23:10, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
    • May I ask how you found that picture, the one that as a better version of the one I had posted. ..::Virchu 00:23, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
I found it almost accidentally from Wikimedia Commons, the Wikimedia Foundation's shared media repository. It is possible to search for images using Wiki's own search engine or an external one such as Google. This, however doesn't work as well as, for example, Flickr's image search. Commons also has image galleries and categories (example). --KFP (talk | contribs) 17:11, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
