Any idea how to achieve compression with PHP?

I tried

//....creation of file, everything in $kml....

//works fine
if ($filetype=="kml"){
        header("Content-type: application/vnd.google-earth.kml+xml");
        echo $kml;
}

//gives parse error
if ($filetype=="kmz"){
        header("Content-type: application/vnd.google-earth.kmz");
        $kmz=gzencode ( $kml );
        echo $kmz;
}
