[edit] Inter-county
Murray first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the late 1980s as a member of the Cork minor hurling team. He first tasted success in 1990 when he won a Munster medal at this level. Murray later joined the Cork under-21 team where he won Munster titles in 1991 and 1993, however, an All-Ireland medal at both minor and under-21 levels eluded him. He also played on the Cork junior hurling team at this time and won a Munster title in 1992. Murray later joined the county senior team and made his championship debut as a substitute against Limerick in 1994. The following few years were fairly barren for Cork, however, in 1999 he came on as a substitute to win his first senior Munster title. Murray later came on as a sub to win a coveted senior All-Ireland medal as Cork defeated Kilkenny in the final for the first time in twenty-one years. He won a second Munster title as a substitute in 2000, however, Cork were later defeated by Offaly in the All-Ireland semi-final. Murray continued playing for another year or so before leaving the inter-county team.
Murray won a Railway Cup medal with Munster in 1995.
