Kevin Harmse (born July 4, 1984 in Johannesburg, South Africa) is a professional soccer player currently plays for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer.
Raised in British Columbia, Harmse was drafted by the Vancouver Whitecaps in 2002 but transferred to Tromsø I.L. in the Norwegian Premier League (Tippeligaen). He did not see much playing time, so he returned to the Whitecaps in 2004, where he gradually worked himself to become a cornerstone of the Whitecaps defense, playing in 36 games and scoring once.
Harmse played an important part of Canadian U-20 team that made it to the quarterfinals in the 2003 FIFA World Youth Championship. He also played for the U-23 team that failed to qualify for the 2004 Olympics.
He then signed for FC Nitra of the Slovakian Corgoň Liga. He left the club in January 2007 and soon went on trial with the Galaxy. He made his debut with the senior Canadian national team March 25, 2007 against Bermuda.
Harmse signed with Los Angeles in April and made his debut for the club on April 12, coming on at halftime against FC Dallas. He received a yellow card after only seven minutes for a foul on FC Dallas' Ramon Nuñez. He scored his first goal for the club in his 3rd match, finding the net in the 17th minute of an April 28th match against Chivas USA.
Harmse's most recent display was an 5-3 loss to Australian side Sydney FC on November 27, 2007 in which Harmse was sent off after collecting two yellow cards, one for a crude hack[1] on Juninho Paulista and a second for stomping on Adam Biddle's arm as he lay on the ground after a tackle.
Juninho will now miss up to five games as a result of a chipped shinbone he sustained in the tackle[2][3]. It is alleged that Harmse told Juninho after the fould that "You guys got Beckham, I hit you." [4] in reference to an accidental tackle on David Beckham earlier in the game. There are allegations, which arose after the game, that Beckham's injury was not as a result of the accidental contact from Brendon Santalab, but rather from losing his traction on the grass. Harmse continued this form in another friendly game in New Zealand against the Wellington Pheonix; According to Michael Bridges, "He got someone in the Galaxy's game on Saturday [against Wellington] as well. He thinks he's a hard man but he's got an attitude problem."[5]
He was traded in March, 2008, to Toronto FC for a fourth round draft pick. In his second game for Toronto FC against D.C. United he was sent off in the 22nd minute for a high tackle.
