[edit] Cities and towns
Since 2006, and various times in recent decades, the Borough has been attempting to annex 4,701 square miles (12,180 km²) of the surrounding area. This area's population is approximately 9 year round residents. Many locals believe that this annexation is motivated by timber receipt money associated with the federal lands the borough hopes to annex. It is a highly unpopular plan among people residing in the communities of Prince of Wales, Myers Chuck, Hyder, and Metlakatla because each of these communities would either face a larger tax burden or lose federal funding for schools and road projects.
