3. Something to do with group theory, but I don't know what. Can anyone fill in?
IANAB (I am not a biologist), but the following looks like a definition that one would find in a dictionary, and unless this could be augmented by further scientific discussion (which would, specifically, use the term "kernel"), I think we should leave it for dictionaries:
- The kernel is the essential part of a seed; all that is within the seed walls; the edible substance contained in the shell of a nut; hence, anything included in a shell, husk, or integument; as, the kernel of a nut. Also a single seed or grain; as, a kernel of corn.
I fully admit I could be wrong, and I invite somebody to prove that this isn't just a definition of an ordinary word but an essential and expandable (though stubby) discussion of a piece of jargon. Otherwise, please see Wikipedia is not a dictionary. --Larry Sanger
Better yet, make Kernel a disambiguation page, and have it link to seed. Revert it if you don't like it. --Damian Yerrick
OK, I'll revert it. (I don't see the point in having the link to the seed article; the point of a disambiguation page is not to list all the possible senses of a word, but to point to existing and potential articles by the name in question.) --Larry Sanger
It seems we should link directly to kernel of a homomorphism instead of to a stub kernel (mathematics) which then links to (and repeats the definition of) kernel of a homomorphism. Also, I find it helpful to give a one-sentence description to orient people who end up on this page. AxelBoldt
At least for the part about "convolution kernel", this links to "convolution" and "linear filter" and neither of those pages has any occurrence of the word "kernel". Seems like something should be done about that... although I guess that is more an issue for those pages than for this one... --omgoleus
Chem student here, wanting to know why none of these have "kernel" as a section electrons in an atom. (Don't ask which section that's what I was hoping to find out... but I know that there is such a thing as a kernel of electrons)) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.31.136.152 (talk) 02:30, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
